Located along Highway 395 on the Eastern Sierra, this was one of the WW II Japanese internment sites. The project started in the early/mid 2000s, before the site was developed with a very nice visitor’s center. I was initially taken by the very precise markers of absent structures and abandoned foundations. Other found details were the very precise gestural arrangements of ordinary objects (rocks, small coins, toys, pieces of glass, old nails) in very specific ways.
A related project, but not yet posted on the website, is the Flight 93 crash site in Pennsylvania. I had visited and photographed the site in 2009, again before it was developed, and found many of the same kind of gestural markers of ordinary objects left behind by visitors to the site. The images index these very similar gestures, but at very different places.
